Algebraic Thinking (AT)
Seven Levels of Staff Development Support
|
Level 1: Intensive Professional Development
The five-day, thirty-hour workshop, prepares teachers to teach Algebraic Thinking (AT) math concepts using unique methodology to meet the needs of emerging math students. The workshop is a grade level specific intensive training in the content and pedagogy of all major middle grades math concepts.
Level 2: Ongoing Coaching
A Coach visits each school on a regular basis to support teachers with proper implementation and methodology. During these visits, the Coach models lessons, team teaches, plans, observes, gives feedback, answers questions, and troubleshoots where needed.
Level 3: Regular E-Communication
Each teacher receives a weekly e-communication containing information to enhance execution of upcoming key math concepts specific to his/her grade level and district pacing including word wall words, essential questions, guided questioning strategies, and higher order thinking questions for upcoming lessons.
Level 4: Website –http://NTNMath.algebraicthinking.com
A resource for teachers, parents, and students, the website provides essential components of AT including lesson planning documents, lesson videos with demonstrations of all major concepts in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole, downloadable homework assignments, and teacher lesson notes.
Level 5: Professional Learning Communities
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are continuing professional development sessions held throughout the school year and open to everyone involved with the implementation of AT, including teachers, classroom assistants, math department chairs, principals, district personnel, etc. These PLCs are led by the Coach.
Level 6: Demonstration Lesson DVDs
DVDs of lesson segments reinforce concepts learned by teachers in the workshop and can be used in their classroom to introduce or revisit lessons, as well as by students following an absence from class or in need of additional assistance. Each teacher receives a set of instructional DVDs that contain short clips of each lesson in AT.

"Algebraic Thinking consultants create assessments that align with our state WASL exam which we can use to predict performance on state assessments for our students. Using the excellent assessments provided for our district by National Training Network allows us to change academic instruction in the classroom, and also provide support to students who are yet succeeding."

"The Algebraic Thinking Program has provided an excellent model of best instructional practices to prepare our students for success in middle and high school mathematics. Our teachers have learned that students develop deeper understanding from concrete, hands-on, experiences which then progress to symbolic experiences before becoming abstract procedures. We have been pleased with our program implementation. The training and coaching support have been absolutely essential to the success of the program."
