Purpose of an Algebraic Thinking Coach |
| National Training Network provides coaching as an integral part of the change process when implementing Algebraic Thinking (AT). Coaching follows thirty hours of intensive training in the content and pedagogy of Algebraic Thinking. NTN has studied districts that have implemented Algebraic Thinking over the years and discovered that to reach fidelity of implementation regular coaching services play a key role. |
Role of an Algebraic Thinking Coach |
Model Teaching
AT coaches are always prepared to teach any lesson in the AT curriculum. Modeling lessons in a teacher’s classroom has a significant effect on the teacher continuing to implement AT. |
Curriculum and Lesson Planning
AT coaches spend time each month working with individual teachers and small planning teams to plan for lesson implementation, work within a pacing guide, and arrange for the use of the correct manipulative materials, all while building the capability of the school faculties to continue to do these tasks on their own. |
Mentoring
This one-on-one relationship with each teacher implementing Algebraic Thinking has proven essential in both building each teacher’s capability and heightening the level of fidelity of implementation of AT. |
Classroom Visit Feedback
AT coaches are trained to observe classrooms in a non-intrusive manner to ascertain the degree of fidelity of implementation of the Algebraic Thinking program by focusing on student learning. They utilize a multi-faceted rubric during the observation and share the data with teachers based on student trends. This allows the coach to augment the assistance they provide in each Algebraic Thinking class. |
Weekly E-Communications
AT coaches develop and send a weekly e-communication to provide essential information regarding key components of the lessons scheduled for the following week, as well as essential questions. |
Ongoing Staff Development
AT coaches are responsible for planning at the school and district level with appropriate personnel to develop ongoing staff development. Often these services will take place at the school level after school hours. Sometimes they will take place on system-wide staff development days. |
